Fall Springs Ahead: Men’s fashion heads in a new direction - Belisi's guide to the fall
007, ethnic print, futuristic military, bold colors, retro, geometric shapes, metallics. Previews of men’s fall fashion covered the gamut, from sleek and polished to reworked traditional and preppy to vampy and 70-80s inspired. While the direction seems scattered, one trend is consistent: men’s fashion is taking a decidedly retroactive/futuristic and more feminine direction, with sleeker, narrow lines, geometric patterns and bold colors and prints.
Some of the new knits for men will remind you of Saturday morning cartoons from childhood, lounging in your two-piece pajamas with prints on them like robots and pscyhadelic designs and patterns—but in a much less campy way. The average American guy might take exception to wearing a hoodie with hearts all over it—so it may take a while for these brazen prints to cross over to mainstream fashion. But don’t be surprised if you walk down a street in NYC or Madrid and see a guy sporting a neon-colored windbreaker that looks like it arrived in a time capsule from 1982.
Another trend rapidly taking hold in fashion hubs is the skinny look. Skinny pants, skinny jeans, skinny jackets and skinny ties—and brace yourselves—leggings. At the debut Marni men's show in Milan, leggings were front and center. The microfiber cotton and wool leggings were shown in a daring palette of violet, dark green and gray, some with—hold your horses--stirrup straps, and some cut above the knee and paired with mercerized cotton jerkins, fitted jackets and skinny ties. While I don’t think the majority of men will embrace the leggings trend, if you’ve been repressing an urge to don a pair, now’s your chance.
Miu Miu also showed its feminine side during Milan Fashion Week with bucket hats and cropped pants that ended just above the ankles. Don’t worry guys; you don’t have to trade in your leather loafers for ballet slippers (maybe for Spring ’08 but I’ll keep you posted). Plenty of designers are keeping an eye out for the traditional male. Calvin Klein’s fall lineup features coated cashmeres and leathers, as well as smooth lines that transition perfectly from day to evening, business to casual. Not everyone lives or works in the heart of a metropolitan area—and even though you may want to stay fashion-forward, you can’t exactly go to work in a purple fitted jacket and wool tights. This fall look for subtle lines that incorporate the upcoming modern theme with a sophisticated international flair.
The daring and tepid alike will find something among the upcoming season’s reinterepretations of traditional styles like cardigans and blazers. Sonia Rykiel’s collection promises some safe choices, along with some riskier choices. If you have some room to play around, her Crayola purples and blues breathe life into the usual somber fall color scheme, while her eccentric, child-like patterns on suit vests and bow ties add a level of fashion dare devel-ism.
If you’re looking to make a big fashion splash, D&G is rolling with a James Bond Theme. In Milan, D&G models sported crisp black bowties to accent g old lamé dress shirts and logo-embroidered velvet tracksuits.
While not every trend will catch on, men’s fashion is long overdue for a major upset. As the ladies continue to bulldoze ahead with bright, mod prints and 60s inspired frocks, the guys were left feeling unremarkable in their fashion options. Well, get ready guys, things are about to change.

Leggings? That is just wrong, so so so wrong. I love the skinny suits though.
