Men’s Fall Fashion is Conservative Cool

No matter what your political views, everyone is affected by the current economy — including leading fashion designers like Ben Sherman, Giorgio Armani and Ralph Lauren. Fashion designers are taking queues from consumers who reigning in discretionary spending, even if they’re doing well financially.

People with money will still spend it, but given these uncertain times they want to feel confident that they’re making wise investments. When it comes to wardrobe building, people want clothes and accessories that will last more than one season. That means so long to the super trendy and increasingly tailored and feminine fashion from recent runway shows, and hello to conservative cool.

Here’s how to incorporate practical, yet stylish, pieces into your fall wardrobe.

•    Choose high quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Think of your dad’s favorite cable knit sweater or your grandfather’s Navy peacoat.

•    Sticks to the basics. You can’t go wrong with a crisp, white button down and several pair of flat-front slacks in neutral colors. Add personality with colorful silk ties, sharp-looking cuff links and well-made leather shoes.

•    Sweaters, sweaters, and more sweaters.

•    Tweed is the name of the game. A peacoat is the coat to own this season. They’re sophisticated in a modern and minimalist way.

Eire-ttitude: Look of the Week

First things first. Eire is short for Eireann, which means Ireland (as in 'Éirinn go breá).

If you’re not used to saying words like trousers, tweed or herringbone, you’d better brush up on your early 20th century vocabulary. There are many looks popular this fall and winter but one of the most distinct is the early 20th century style inspired by our fair Irish friends. We’re not suggesting that you suit up in knickers but you might consider picking up a few plaid, tweed, wool and herringbone pieces to add to your wardrobe.

Once very popular among Hollywood’s elite, the pocket square disappeared for the most part. The good news is that this elegant trend has returned. Belisi calls Ties the versatile men's accessory

Palmbeach_3Who doesn't love getting the most out of their investments? Two-fers, double-downs, whatever you want to call them, we all like getting a little something for nothing. Men's ties, while they seem to only have one look for one purpose, the truth is, neckties are a versatile accessory. You can wear them to the typical places: work, the opera, church but you can also wear a loosened tie for an afternoon event or Sunday brunch--on a warm summer night to a dinner date. Wider knots, tighter knots or loose around the collar, ties add character and personalized style to suits and casual button-downs, plus you can wear them with or without the accompaniment of a blazer or pocket square.

How to fold a pocket square by Belisi

If you haven’t heard, men's pocket squares are all the rage. Think Fred Astaire meets the 21st century (without the top hat). Sounds cool, right? Now’s the hard part: how in the world do you fold a pocket square? You probably didn’t get any pointers from your dad because pocket squares were on hiatus during his heyday—and he just had his dad fold them for special occasions.

Who needs another necktie? Belisi says maybe Dad

Okay, so Father’s Day is right around the corner. Wondering what to get Dad? Neckties get a lot of flack for being the “stand-by” gift for guys. Sure, when you’re talking about discount store ties purchased at the last minute, it’s understandable that ties get a bad rap.

But the truth is, ties are still a current and useful (even romantic) gift. Aside from being easy to purchase, ties are a popular gift to give and receive because they pull together an ensemble like no other accessory. A tie can be the centerpiece of an entire outfit (with the right tie of course). When a father wears a tie given to him by his children or wife, he carries a piece of his loved ones with them
wherever his career takes him.

The rise of the tee

T-shirts have always been a part of American men’s fashion but the industry has come a long way from Fruit of the Loom. Tees, like jeans, are acceptable garments in many social situations. They’re versatile too. Throw on a tee with your favorite jeans or pair with a fitted blazer and you go from stuffy conservative to urban professional. Maybe it’s the new price tags or just a shift in public perception (if we have to work, we should at least be comfortable right?). In the past, a pressed shirt and crisp suit meant you were polished and put together—now it screams “slave to the Man.”

Fall Springs Ahead: Men’s fashion heads in a new direction - Belisi's guide to the fall

007, ethnic print, futuristic military, bold colors, retro, geometric shapes, metallics. Previews of men’s fall fashion covered the gamut, from sleek and polished to reworked traditional and preppy to vampy and 70-80s inspired. While the direction seems scattered, one trend is consistent: men’s fashion is taking a decidedly retroactive/futuristic and more feminine direction, with sleeker, narrow lines, geometric patterns and bold colors and prints.

Belisi Fashions: Dressing to Impress

It’s not just one leg after another

Does it really come as a surprise that the more we know the more difficult things become? We create products to simplify our lives but in doing so make our lives more complicated—take cell phones and e-mail for example. It’s great when you can check movie times or game stats while waiting in line at the bank but when all you want to do is sip a Pina Colada on a sandy beach, that email notification emanating from your Treo can get pretty darn old.
